March 7, 2025
It feels like all our collective cultural energy went into planning for the event that is the 40th birthday party. The whole “over the hill” theme, joking about someone having one foot in the grave, or signing up for their AARP card is all fine and dandy for the big 4-0. But what do you do when you have to plan someone’s 50th birthday party? By the time someone turns 50, they can already sign up for the AARP! The joke just isn’t funny anymore. So what do you do? 50th Birthday Party — Event Ideas
1) House Party
There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned house party to make people feel warm, invited, and well-loved by their friends and family. Keep it simple and stay close to home.
2) Surprise Party
A simple house party isn’t good enough for you? Add a surprise element and add some excitement, thrill, and intrigue!
3) Cocktail Hour
Class it up and turn your house party into a cocktail hour. You could hire a bartender from a local service or just mix up your own at-home versions of several classic cocktails.
4) Rent a Beautiful Space
Take cocktail hour, the surprise party, or any other idea to a beautiful space in your town or city to elevate the birthday festivities to an even higher level. I’m seeing: exposed brick, mature balloon arches, small bites on large toothpicks—are you picking up what I’m putting down? Set a dress code and make it classy.
5) Old Fashioned Sleepover
All right, maybe a night with the manatees doesn’t appeal. What about an old-fashioned sleepover, complete with cozy PJs, indulgent snacks, sleeping bags (maybe on an air mattress?), and old favorite movies on the VCR. You can rent a VCR (or buy one cheaply) and pick up some VHS tapes of your favorites. Just keep it down, kids! Your mother has to work in the morning.
6) Reverse Quinceañera
Did you celebrate your own quinceañera when you were a 15-year-old girl? Why not throw yourself a reverse quineañera at 50? Buy a gigantic, sparkly dress, get yourself a crown, and make all your friends take pictures with you. Emerge as the woman you’ve always wanted to be!
7) Throwback Theme Party
If you’re looking for 50th birthday parties in and around the publication year of this article (2025), it means you or your intended celebrant are firmly part of Generation X. You little misanthrope, you. Why not plan a Gen X-themed throwback theme party to celebrate your big 5-0?
8) Family Reunion
You don’t have to travel to have a good time on your birthday. Use the day as an excuse to get everyone together for a good ol-fashioned family reunion.
9) Old Friends Reunion
If family isn’t your thing, go for a chosen family reunion instead with your oldest friends.
10) Murder Mystery Dinner
This is such a fun time. Don’t worry about it being cheesy. Lean in and figure out Who Dun It.
11) Intimate Dinner Party
Dinner doesn’t have to be exotic to be good. Book a special table at an intimate spot, like a high-end Michelin restaurant, and eat well with someone you love. What could be better?
12) One False Move Party
My friends and I used to love playing this game, but it would be a great concept for an immersive birthday experience. Your “One False Move” self is the person you would be now if you had made that “one false move” that would have taken your life in a completely different direction. For example, instead of majoring in journalism, I went to business school. Who would I be? What would I be doing on my 50th birthday? Inform your friends of this conceit and plan a party that you all attend as your one false move selves. It’s a fantastically silly way to play dress up, to get to live the parallel life that you never pursued, and—just like in Miracle on 42nd Street—to be grateful for the life you did choose to have.
50th Birthday Party — Experience Ideas
13) Pedal and Party
If walking’s not your thing, why not rent a large group bicycle and tour your city while sipping on something good? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out these examples in Denver, Nashville, and Pittsburgh.
14) River Walk
Maybe we’re not all lucky enough to live close to San Antonio’s famous Riverwalk (it’s worth a visit if you’ve never been), but that doesn’t have to preclude you from taking the party to the banks. Make it an ecological tour of your favorite running water, or, like they do in San Anton’, choose a location that’s stacked with bars and restaurants.
15) Museum Tour or Rental
For the lifelong learner in your life, why not hit up a museum for the big 5-0? There’s nothing wrong with a tranquil day exploring new exhibits and installations. Or you could rent the space to turn the day into an elegant affair, like at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.
16) Aquarium
If a night at the museum isn’t your thing, what about immersing yourself at the aquarium? Spend the day exploring and learning, or plan your glam event in the tunnels at the San Francisco Aquarium of the Bay.
17) Zoo-In
Take a walk on the wild side and sleep over at the zoo. Far be it for me to suggest that you merely visit the zoo for your 50th birthday. I’m saying: spend a full 24 hours sleeping over at the zoo. You can do it in Cincinnati. Why not near you?
18) Party Bus
Hit the road by renting a party bus for you and your friends.
19) Botanical Gardens
Why not spend a peaceful afternoon at your local botanical gardens?
20) Golf Day
Speaking of the whole nine yards, why not take your buddies on a golf day to celebrate?
21) Tandem Biking
Tandem biking. I can’t imagine something that would make me laugh more than trying to tandem bike on my 50th birthday. Break a leg! (Or don’t.)
22) Hatchet Throwing
Get out your anger at the endless onslaught of the passage of time by aggressively launching sharp objects into a wall in the company of your closest pals.
23) Escape Rooms
Personally, you would never catch me dead in an escape room, but hey, maybe you like having panic attacks while solving puzzles. If so, sign up!
Beauty, Spa, and Relaxation Ideas

Go to your local beauty counter and stylist to revamp your look and style for your next decade!

32) Symphony
Immerse yourself in music at the symphony.
50th Birthday Party — Adrenaline Junkie Ideas
33) Helicopter Ride
If you’re looking to reach new heights, why not do it literally? Book a helicopter ride and see your city (or a brand new city!) from a totally new perspective. You can do a chopper tour of Las Vegas for about 100 bucks. You can also shell out a lot more for different types of tours, too, like these multi-site sessions over NYC.
34) Bungee Jumping
Trying to thrill seek? Why not check bungee jumping off your bucket list?
35) Sky Diving
Or you could turn up the adrenaline all the way to 11 and book a sky-diving session!
36) Hot Air Balloon
While we’re thinking about thrill-seeking, why not seek out a hot air balloon ride for a romantic and exciting excursion?
37) Scuba Diving
My mom is a huge scuba freak. She’s gone diving in shipwrecks, caves, and Mexico’s Blue Hole. If you have a scuba head in your life (or you are one yourself), why not dive deep for your bday? You could turn it into a whole big thing and check out Paradiso del Sub in the southern Italian province of Calabria for an even grander avventura.
38) Surfing Lessons
Heading to—or live near—the coast? Rent a wet suit and pick up a surfing lesson.
39) Whitewater Rafting
Spice it up with a whitewater rafting tour—maybe on the Colorado River?
50th Birthday Party — Travel Ideas
40) Island Vacation
While you’re Googling Calabrian beaches, you could just find yourself an island vacation. What about Malta? How about the Maldives? What about Zanzibar? I bet you never thought about Zanzibar, did you?
41) Lake House
If the islands aren’t for you, maybe a lake house is your thing. You could go big, or you could go to a tiny home.
42) Tree House
Before you fall down an AirBnb hole looking for lake houses, would you just consider a tree house stay? Just think about it. Just think! And when you decide on it, take me with you.
43) Airbnb Roulette
Perhaps you’re more elevated than even the humble tree house. You are not bound by mere mortal categories. You could play a game of Airbnb Roulette. Go to dates, click “Flexible,” choose your time frame (weekend, week, month), and your number of adults. For the location, close your eyes, spin the globe, and put your finger down in a random place. Or, open the dictionary, choose a random word, and start typing it until the autofill feature gives you something that sparks your curiosity. Or type “Anywhere” and see what comes up.
44) Darts on a Map
Hang a map up on a wall that you don’t mind having a few holes in. Or attach it to a bulletin board that’s already attached to the wall. Throw yourself three darts. Where do they land? Pick one of those places. That’s where you’re going to celebrate, baby!
45) Cheap Flight Extravaganza
There’s nothing like a cheap flight to make you feel like you’re really getting away with something. Go searching on Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, or your airline miles credit card site and see where the cheapest flight is headed on your 50th. Pack your bags!
46) European Getaway
If you’re not in the habit of scrimping, why not go all out on a European getaway for your 50th? You could go off the beaten path and check out I Borghi Più Belli d’Italia or Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España, the most beautiful villages in Italy and Spain. The possibilities are endless!
47) Dollywood
And if you’d prefer an adventure much closer to home, why not Dollywood? Give me one reason why not. It’s the #1 theme park in the United States, if you can believe it!
48) Ski Chalet
If your birthday falls in the winter months, get toasty by booking a weekend in a ski chalet and hit the slopes!
49) Hot Springs
If it’s cold, get yourself to the hot springs for your wintertime birthday.
50) Old Fashioned Bed and Breakfast
Maybe Airbnb seems too cliche. Why not get off the internet and seek out an old-fashioned bed and breakfast for a quaint stay?
51) Carriage Ride in Central Park

52) National Monuments Tour
History buff? Head to Washington, D.C., and book a tour of the national monuments.

Food & Drink Ideas
54) Walking Food Tour
One of my good friends once held a self-proclaimed “Joel’s First Annual Strip District Walking Food Tour” through the culinary wonderland that is Pittsburgh’s Strip District for his birthday. We simply walked the short distances between his old favorites and new locales he wanted to try. It made for an exciting adventure for all of us. Was there a Joel’s Second Annual Walking Food Tour? Look, no one’s perfect.
55) Wine Tasting
You really can’t go wrong with an elegant night of wine tasting. You could check out the site of a vineyard in your city, or get out into the countryside and head to the vineyard itself for a sumptuous sip.
56) Brewery Tours
If wine isn’t your thing, go behind the scenes at your favorite brewery to see how the beer is made.
57) Whiskey Tasting
Put yourself in the birthday “spirit” and tour whiskey distilleries. Get super fancy and go to Bourbon County, Kentucky, for the real thing!
58) Dinner in an Exotic Restaurant
I don’t mean, like, exotic cuisine (whatever that means to you). I mean, like, a restaurant built into a cliff. Or at the top of a mountain.
50th Birthday Party — Outdoor Lover Ideas
59) National Park Getaway
America’s National Parks are our crown jewel. You don’t have to be the rugged type to enjoy them. Get yourself a weekend stay at a hotel or spa—just be sure you’re going through the .gov websites to get to the official hotels that are located within the parks themselves.
60) Road Trip
If the open road is calling, take yourself on a road trip to celebrate the big 5-0!
61) Rent an RV
You can amp up the road trip by going out in style. Rent an RV, Airstream, or camper to take your trip to the next level.
62) Bag Some New Peaks
Are you a hiker? Take yourself to Colorado to hike some of the state’s famous 14ers—mountains with peak elevations at or above 14,000 feet. However, if that’s not accessible, check out hiking opportunities at whichever mountain range is closest to you.
63) Through-Hiking
You don’t have to summit a mountain to celebrate. Plan a through-hiking trip on the Appalachian or Pacific Crest Trails.
64) Big Sur
If you’re on the Pacific coast, you really can’t beat a weekend in Big Sur. Go hiking, hang out on the beach, and enjoy some California nature.
65) Fishing in Montana
If you love the great outdoors, book yourself a fishing excursion in Montana—or another one of America’s gorgeous western states.
66) Grand Canyon
If you’ve never done it, go see the Grand Canyon. A monumental experience for a monumental year of your life.
50th Birthday Party — Class Ideas
67) Cooking Class
Sign up for a local cooking class and learn a new dish!

70) Learn Woodworking
Why not try your hand taking a class on a specific trade? We’ve got some suggestions! You could start with woodworking…
71) Pottery Class
…Or you can take a spin at a pottery class…
72) Bread baking class
…Or you could rise to the occasion at a bread-baking class…
73) Glass Blowing
…Or you could have a birthday blowout blowing glass!
Off-the-Beaten-Path Ideas
74) Bucket List
There’s a Parks & Recreation episode in which April and Andy attack Andy’s bucket list on the day that a local cult proclaims will be the end of the world. It’s one of the sweetest things in the world. Why can’t you be that sweet? Accordingly, dust off your old bucket list (or write one with your best friends, spouse, or siblings!) and figure out which ones you can do together in one day (or two, or three…). As the kids say: YOLO. Don’t worry: it means “You Only Live Once.”
75) Volunteering
Tired of getting? Trying to give back? Why not spend your 50th volunteering for an organization that means the most to you? A great way to plan service, if you’re not already connected with an organization, is to reach out well in advance and see what they currently need. Maybe they’re understaffed for an event, and you and your friends could act as staff. Maybe your local food bank is in need of a list of specific items and you could host a Party Drive to raise funds or collect goods. The possibilities are endless!
76) Thrifting
Take yourself and your friends on a shopping spree, but do it 21st-century style. Go thrifting at the local vintage shops in your town!
77) Reverse Birthday
What about a reverse birthday? Instead of looking to celebrate yourself, take time to celebrate those people closest to you. For example, you could take your kids out for a one-on-one dinner to hear about their lives. You could make a point to catch up with and celebrate your friendship with your oldest friends. If you don’t love birthdays, why not make this day about the others in your life?
78) Home-cooked Meal
Keep it simple with a delicious home-cooked, made by you, for the ones you love. Alternatively, if you don’t like to cook, request one from your favorite home chef.
79) DIY Project Unveiling
Plan a few months in advance and spend the time leading up to your birthday to finish that DIY project you’ve been wanting to complete. For example, maybe it’s your She Shed. Your Man Cave. Your koi pond. Or your inground pool. Whatever the project, use your birthday as a deadline and then celebrate your new accomplishment!
80) Train for a Marathon
Spend a few months (or longer) planning and training for a major athletic achievement: a marathon.
81) Train for a Triathlon
Bike, swim, run to 50!
82) Train for an Ultramarathon
A 50k on your 50th? How creative…
83) Learn a Foreign Language
Parlez vous Français? If you start studying now, on your 50th, you just might.
84) Take Yourself Out (Meet Someone New?)
Do you have some grievances to air with the people in your life? Instead of engaging in Festivus for your 50th, take yourself out on a solo adventure. Maybe you’ll meet someone new!
85) Birthday Week Extravaganza
Do you want to go whole hog? Do you want a birthday blowout? Combine five or seven of the above ideas and book yourself a whole week of birthday fun!
