Alpha High School: Private High School Spotlight
March 18, 2025
As math and reading proficiency among US students continues to decline, as the teacher shortage grows, and as student mental health issues spike, we must ask ourselves: What isn’t working? What needs to be changed? How do we make school more enjoyable? How do we create self-motivated, critical thinkers who are inspired to do big things? Enter Alpha High School and its bold educational model, which provides revolutionary solutions to every single one of the above issues. At its core, Alpha believes that all students have limitless potential, crave challenges, and will do incredible things when given the time, space, and support to rise to the occasion. In today’s blog, we’re diving into Alpha’s model, curriculum structure, and outcomes.

How is Alpha High School different from other high schools?
Founded by MacKenzie Price, Alpha High School uses personalized AI technology to revolutionize student learning. Its 2 Hour Learning model, innovated over a decade ago by Price, condenses six hours of traditional classroom instruction into 2-3 hours of highly targeted, personalized learning, facilitated by adaptive AI apps. Essentially, each student’s AI tutor helps determine what they already know as well as the gaps in their knowledge, creating an optimal level of challenge and saving hours of time (more than that later).
2 Hour Learning is mastery-based, meaning that students need to demonstrate full understanding of a particular concept before they can move on. Accordingly, their AI tutor will meet them where they’re at, providing additional lessons and reinforcing earlier skills if they are struggling. Moreover, before Alpha students can move to the next grade level, they must score 90% or above on state- and national-level standardized assessments.
Wondering about teachers? Although Alpha students attend school in person, there are no traditional teachers. All core academic learning is facilitated by AI apps with adult Guides present within each class to provide motivational and emotional support.. Ultimately, Alpha’s model strives to teach students how to become self-led learners and take control of their own education.
Wait…why no teachers?!
Traditional classrooms are often filled with busy work and non-differentiated academics. This means that students who are struggling may not receive the help they need, and advanced students may not receive enough of a challenge. Simply put, it’s incredibly difficult for traditional classroom teachers to provide personalized instruction to every student.
As such, Alpha High’s non-traditional AI teaching model seeks to disrupt what we think we know about how students learn best. By combining mastery-based learning with individualized attention, Alpha creates an environment that is not only challenging and efficient but also enjoyable.
Moreover, Alpha’s model has been proven to be effective not only for advanced students but also for those who have fallen behind. Why? Adaptive AI is capable of providing consistent challenge to advanced students and appropriate scaffolding to those who need more support.
Finally, Alpha’s AI system maintains incredibly detailed student data, updating student learning plans, goals, and outcomes on a daily basis. As a parent, this makes it easy for you to see exactly where your child stands academically.
What do Alpha High School students do in the afternoon?
One of Alpha’s core philosophies is that students will thrive in unprecedented ways when given the time and space to do so. Accordingly, afternoons are for developing passions and building life skills, but what that looks like on a nitty-gritty level will depend on whether you are enrolled in the Alpha High track or Alpha Honors track. Let’s take a look at both.
What is the Alpha High track?
In the Alpha High track, students use their morning academic period to strive for an exceptional level of subject-level mastery as well as a 1350+ SAT score (placing them in the top 10% nationally) and 4s and 5s on their AP exams. Then, after completing their morning academics in 2-3 hours, students will have the entire afternoon to work on projects, pursue internships, train for athletics or other extracurricular passions, and engage in life skills workshops that develop public speaking, financial literacy, feedback, grit, and goal setting.
What is the Alpha Honors Track?
Do you have Ivy League aspirations? The Alpha Honors Track, developed for students targeting highly selective, elite universities, will not only help you build an impressive application but also develop the skills necessary to succeed in rigorous learning environments.
In the mornings, Alpha Honors students receive support that enables them to earn at least a 1550 on their SATs and 5s on multiple difficult AP exams. However, Alpha High School acknowledges that high grades and test scores are only one piece of the Ivy League puzzle. To thrive in today’s cutthroat college admissions gauntlet, students must also demonstrate that they are passionate, intellectually curious leaders capable of driving future change.
To accomplish that objective, Alpha Honors students complete Alpha X, a passion project so ambitious that it has a jaw-dropping, Olympic-medal-level “wow” factor. At Alpha, these passion projects are called Alpha X Masterpieces, and every single Honors Track student completes one.
What, exactly, is a Masterpiece?
Launching a nonprofit? Building an app with thousands of users? Developing an industry-changing product? Starting a business? Filming a documentary? These endeavors might sound like pipe dreams to most high school students— or attainable only by sacrificing all sleep and any shred of sanity—but not to students at Alpha. At Alpha, pipe dreams become the blueprint for their Masterpieces: highly ambitious, 1,000-hour passion projects that seek to revolutionize or drive major, quantifiable change within a certain space. These projects are not hypothetical—they’re real, actual initiatives that students create, develop, launch, grow, publicize, and market during their time at Alpha High School.
Additionally, since Masterpieces are undertaken by every single student in the Alpha Honors track, you’ll be surrounded by others who are just as motivated and ambitious as you are. As a result, this collaborative, iterative environment serves as a 24/7 incubator, driving positive outcomes.
What type of Masterpieces do Alpha Honors students create?
Need some examples of past Masterpieces? We’ve got you. One recent graduate, Grace, produced a documentary on the relationship between epigenetics and cancer that has been viewed over five million times and even testified before the US Senate. Rhett raised over $3.5 million that he used to build Texas’ largest bike park; he was also named as one of Austin Business Journal’s Innovators under 25. Kate created and wrote Austin Scholar, a Substack with thousands of subscribers that makes over $50k per year. Alex, who won multiple micro-grants, is building an AI-powered plushie for teens, while Elle was featured on the Today Show for her dating coach app for teens, Ask Elle, which was downloaded 20,000 times in its first two weeks.
If you’re wondering how Alpha Honors students find the time to execute these projects, let’s go back to the 2 Hour Learning model. Remember, Alpha students tackle their academics in the morning and typically complete them within 2-3 hours, gifting them back around twenty hours per week to pursue other endeavors, including their Alpha X Masterpieces.
I don’t know where my passions lie yet. Is that okay?
Absolutely! Although some students arrive at Alpha knowing exactly what type of passion project they’d like to pursue, many do not. Accordingly, all students progress through a series of structured iteration phases and design sprints. As a freshman, you can also enroll in the Explore program, which will provide extra mentorship and support.
What are Alpha High School’s results and outcomes?
Given Alpha’s learning model, it’s natural for parents and students to wonder “Does this really work?” However, Alpha has been perfecting its approach since 2014, when it enrolled its first class of elementary students. Last year, those students graduated with flying colors: College acceptances included elite universities across the country, including Vanderbilt, Stanford, USC, Northeastern, Texas A&M, and the University of Texas at Austin, half of the class were National Merit Scholars or Commended Scholars, and five were AP Scholars with Distinction.
While these students’ academic and postsecondary achievements are certainly a testament to the strength of 2 Hour Learning, an even more convincing testament is Alpha’s decade-worth of student outcomes, which have not only been closely tracked but also openly publicized. Let’s take a peek at that data.
For starters, Alpha High students have the highest test scores in the state of Texas. Incredibly, the average SAT score of an Alpha student is 1470, and 90% earn all 4s or 5s on their AP exams. Moreover, according to the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment, a standardized assessment tool used in schools nationwide, Alpha students of all grade levels average in the top 1-2% of every subject. Finally, they actually do learn approximately two times faster than students within a traditional classroom model, enabling them to complete an entire grade level in approximately 80-90 days.
Where is Alpha High School located and how do I apply?
