101 Largest High Schools in the United States – 2025
November 1, 2025
Did you know that there are over 20,000 high schools in the United States? With so many choices, picking the right high school might not be as easy as a one-size-fits-all decision. For example, while some students may like a more individualized approach at a small campus, others may enjoy attending a large institution. In fact, there are probably many high schoolers who would love to enroll in the largest high school in America.
However, during the onset of the pandemic, a lot of students saw a shift toward online instruction. Since then, there’s been a huge surge in the popularity of online instruction. Even now, a lot of students, including high schoolers, still opt for this choice.
Understandably, it’s no surprise that the largest high schools in United States are often online schools. Because there’s no need for a physical campus, the school is able to enroll more students.
Because of this, we’ve decided to break up this article into two sections. To start, we’ll show you a list of the largest high schools in United States that are fully remote options, or schools that offer online-only instruction. Because of the flexibility in learning, this option is increasingly popular, especially since students from all over the state are usually able to partake in online instruction at the same high school.
Secondly, we will provide a list of the largest high schools in the United States that are brick-and-mortar—or physical—locations.
Before we start, it is important to note that a lot of these online schools are intuitions that serve students in grades from elementary through high school. However, in the write-up provided, we will focus more on the course offerings and opportunities for students in grades 9-12.

Largest High Schools in America – In Review
There are certain benefits to attending large high schools. Many of these large schools have the capacity to offer more student organizations, which means a wide variety of extracurriculars to choose from. Students are usually offered more AP courses and even dual enrollment opportunities to start earning college credit early. Even online high schools can offer rigorous and competitive academics.
Additionally, there will be a larger selection of classes, likely because there are more faculty and staff available to teach them. So, in some cases, students may be able to take classes in a more niche subject or interest.
Overall, whether a high school has a few hundred students or a few thousand, their goals are all the same. Teachers and staff want to ensure that students are prepared and well-equipped to make the best decisions about their future post-graduation. Whether they attend a four-year college, enter the workforce, or take a gap year, their high school education will set them up for success in all they do.
