Meet Miles: A Commack High School Senior Chasing Particle Physics
Miles attends Commack High School, the only high school in the Commack Union Free School District. Overall, it is the highest-ranked traditional public high school in Suffolk County, per U.S. News. The school enrolls roughly 1,750 students and reports a 61% AP/IB participation rate. Miles arrived at Commack with a strong math background and a vague interest in engineering. However, a sophomore-year physics elective, combined with a family trip to Brookhaven Lab’s public open house, redirected him toward something more specific. He grew fascinated with the physics of subatomic particles. Above all, every piece of it centered on nuclear and particle physics.
Step 1: Choosing a Differentiated Major
Miles settled on physics with a declared interest in nuclear and particle physics. That is a narrower path than the generic “STEM” label many applicants default to. His College Transitions advisor pushed him to articulate why this specific subfield fit his goals, rather than physics broadly. Importantly, that specificity became the throughline for every activity, essay, and supplement that followed.

Step 2: Improving Test Scores
New York uses the SAT as its primary college-admissions assessment. Miles focused his preparation there instead of splitting attention across two tests. He first sat for the SAT in the fall of junior year and scored 1270, a respectable but unremarkable result for his target schools. Subsequently, he worked with a tutor who specialized in the math section, since physics programs weigh quantitative scores heavily. By the following spring, his score had climbed to 1490. That 220-point jump mattered. However, the story behind it mattered more: Miles could explain, in interviews, exactly which concepts he had shored up and why.
Step 3: Deepening Extracurriculars
Rather than joining a long list of unrelated clubs, Miles concentrated his time on activities that reinforced his physics interest. He co-founded Commack High School’s Physics Olympiad prep group, recruiting eight classmates and running weekly problem sets. Additionally, he volunteered at Brookhaven Lab’s Summer Sunday public science events, where he explained detector technology to visiting families. Above all, he treated depth as the goal, not breadth. A club title means little to admissions readers unless it connects to something larger.
Step 4: Adding Independent Research
Miles applied to Brookhaven National Laboratory’s High School Research Program, an eight-week summer opportunity that pairs Long Island students with working scientists. He was accepted for the summer after junior year. His mentor then assigned him to analyze calibration data from the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

That gave his family a reliable financial and academic safety net well before regular-decision deadlines arrived. He also applied Early Decision to the University of Rochester, whose Department of Physics and Astronomy has ties to the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. It was a natural extension of his nuclear physics interest. Rochester also accepted him in December.
