Firstly, we want to hammer home that the 300 best colleges in the U.S. listed below are not the only schools that might be a good fit for you. So, before alums or representatives from omitted schools start penning nasty emails to us, understand that this list is not intentionally exclusionary. Depending on one’s circumstances (again, all higher education value is context-dependent), there may be hundreds more schools that could serve as fine postsecondary destinations from which to springboard into a successful career/life. We hope that this list will help give you the tools and mindset to begin evaluating any prospective institution.
Secondly, there are many lists on the internet of the best colleges in the U.S. that are methodologically sound; there are others that are less so. Done poorly or done extremely well, rankings all have their limitations. For example, in the course of calculating an academic rating, Bowdoin Colleges beats UVA by a sliver of a percentage and therefore jumps one slot in the rankings, that doesn’t mean Bowdoin is a “better” school than UVA. At the end of the day, we hope that you find our list particularly useful more because of the academic and outcomes data that we have shared on each profile than for the rankings themselves.
That said, we want to give you the full picture of how we selected the 200 best colleges in the United States.
