In 2023, the median salary for paralegals was more than $60,000, or about $30 per hour. Moreover, while the overall growth in the job sector is projected to be only about 1% over the next decade, there are still more than 37,000 estimated to be created or opened every year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And if you’re interested in maintaining your current job or your obligations to family while you study, pursuing your education through an online paralegal program could be the right move for you.
With so many options out there and an endless stream of search results for “online paralegal programs” on Google, how do you find the best one?
What Are the Best Online Paralegal Certificate Programs?
The best online paralegal program, undoubtedly, will combine a high level of academic rigor, job training, and the right elements that will meet your needs.
There are plenty of great options, but you’ll want to consider a series of questions that will help you determine the best online paralegal programs to meet your needs.
Take a look at the following concerns and questions. They’re a helpful matrix that will help you determine what your specific needs and goals are. Once you have some of these answers, you’ll be better equipped to find the best program.
Some questions to consider:
- Cost: What’s your budget? How much does the program cost? How much financial aid is available? Will you need to take out a student loan to cover costs?
- Program length: How much time do you have to dedicate to your education? Do you want to study full-time or part-time? Do you want to complete your studies in one year? Two years? Four?
- Degree type: Do you want to earn a certificate? Associate’s degree? Bachelor’s degree?
- School status: How important is the school’s “brand name” to you? Do you want to go to a school that has regional appeal? National recognition?
- Flexibility: Do you want to attend a program that’s 100% online and asynchronous? Or do you want to be held accountable to attend classes at a determined, synchronized time? Do you want a hybrid element or the expectation that you complete a professional experience prior to graduation?
Should I Do a Synchronous or Asynchronous Program?
In online education, you’ll often see the words “synchronous” and “asynchronous” used to describe the formatting of a program. These words describe how courses will meet and how you’ll interact with your instructors.
“Synchronous” means that you will need to show up to “live” online class sessions at a specific meeting time. You’ll have the social accountability of scheduled meetings with the flexibility of being online.
“Asynchronous” means that you are not “synched” with time. So, you’ll either watch recordings from your instructors or read books and articles that you will then respond to through assignments. Asynchronous programs require more responsibility for the flexibility they give you.
Do I Need to Attend an ABA-Approved Paralegal Program?
That’s a great question. Unlike so many other professional training programs that we talk about in this blog, the short answer is: no. The long answer involves a little bit of an explanation about what it means to become a paralegal and what ABA approval means. Let us give you the rundown.
What is ABA Approval?
The American Bar Association (ABA)—the association that controls the bar exam that licenses lawyers to practice law—has an approval process for paralegal programs. The approval certifies that those programs offer a certain level of education that will prepare you well to work as a paralegal.
How Do Institutions Get ABA Approval?
Any university or institution that runs a paralegal program can seek approval for its program from the ABA. But seeking approval from the ABA is ultimately completely voluntary. It’s something the university or institution has to pursue itself. So, if a university already has a well-known name, good standing, and lots of students applying and enrolling every year, it might not need to undergo the process of potentially changing its program, or, at the very least, dedicating the resources toward vetting it to meet the ABA’s requirements.
The ABA also confirms that the lack of ABA approval does not indicate a program’s quality. They say, “the lack of approval does not necessarily mean a paralegal program is not of good quality and reputable.”
How Much Does ABA Approval Matter?
Currently, there is no professional certification process that paralegals themselves need to undergo in order to work in the profession. Unlike lawyers, they don’t have to pass a “paralegal bar exam” to be qualified to get hired. So, paralegal programs don’t need to prepare you to pass a test. They’re just driven toward equipping you with the agreed-upon skills necessary to be successful on the job. In other words: paralegal programs don’t need to build you toward a certain exam competency in order to be considered a “good” program.
That said, go with your gut here. If a program isn’t ABA-approved, but it’s a very well-known university, you can likely trust that program’s credibility. If you’re dealing with Boston University (which we’ve included on our list below), for example, you shouldn’t worry about the quality of the education you’ll receive. Interestingly enough, other bigger, more well-known schools on our list are also not ABA-approved. But you’ve never heard of the school before and it’s selling you something that’s too good to be true—it probably is. Trusting an overnight cure is generally never a good idea. And that holds true for paralegal programs, too.
Again, the best program is going to be the best quality program that’s going to meet your needs.
