The Boston Advantage: What This City Offers Applicants

Few American cities pack this many colleges into so small a footprint. Notably, Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Northeastern, and Tufts all sit within a short train ride. As a result, that proximity translates into real, verifiable opportunities, not just an essay talking point.

Paid Work Experience Through the City

The Boston Private Industry Council, working with the city’s Office of Youth Employment and Opportunity, places thousands of BPS students in paid internships each year through the futureBOS platform. Placements span healthcare, finance, life sciences, architecture, and law. In fact, more than 200 companies and institutions participate citywide. Students interested specifically in technology can apply to the PIC’s Tech Apprentice track, a paid six-to-seven-week placement built around real IT projects.

Museum and Arts Access

The Museum of Fine Arts runs a Teen Arts Council for Boston residents and BPS students. Specifically, it is a paid, year-round leadership program that pays $15 an hour to help plan museum events and lead teen tours. Applicants must currently attend a Boston school or live in the city, so this resource is tied specifically to Boston residency rather than open statewide.

Civic Leadership

The Mayor’s Youth Council seats 20 Boston high schoolers, ages 14 to 19. Members spend the school year meeting with city officials and developing policy responses to issues their peers identify. The most recent cohort was drawn from 226 applicants across nine schools, and the city opens a new cycle every summer.

University-Level Research

Northeastern University’s Young Scholars Program, now in its 30th year, offers Massachusetts residents a free six-week research placement the summer after junior year. The Honest Challenges of Applying from Boston

None of this erases the real tradeoffs. Boston’s exam school admissions process is itself a high-stakes filter. A student who does not test into Boston Latin, Boston Latin Academy, or O’Bryant lands in a system where AP access and counseling support vary enormously by school. Consider Fenway High School, where AP participation sits at just 18%: a student there is not competing on the same playing field as a student at Boston Latin, even though both attend BPS.

In fact, counselor caseloads compound the problem. Large comprehensive high schools in Boston often assign one counselor to several hundred students, which leaves limited time for individualized guidance. Families used to smaller suburban districts, where a counselor might manage 100 students or fewer, should therefore expect to handle more essay brainstorming and deadline tracking themselves.

Selectivity within the city is also real. Because Boston Latin and O’Bryant draw applicants from every neighborhood, a talented student who narrowly misses the cutoff can land at a school with far fewer AP sections, through no fault of their own. Colleges generally understand this dynamic in a broad sense, though it nevertheless still shapes what a given transcript can show.

Admissions officers evaluate rigor relative to what a school offers, not against a fixed national bar. A student at New Mission who takes every AP course available, for instance, demonstrates real initiative. Boston Public Schools has expanded AP offerings by 20% since 2018, so families should check their specific school’s current catalog rather than assume it matches what an older sibling took.

Testing Strategy

Massachusetts does not administer the ACT statewide, so most Boston students default to the SAT. Many colleges now require scores again after several test-optional years. As a result, students should plan a testing timeline that allows for at least one retake before Early Decision deadlines.
