The Boston Competitive Landscape
Boston’s college admissions landscape is unlike almost anywhere else in the country. The city’s own high schools reflect that intensity. Boston Latin School, founded in 1635, currently ranks first in Massachusetts and 46th nationally according to U.S. News & World Report. Its graduation rate sits at 98%, and 94% of students pass at least one AP exam. Boston Latin Academy and the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science round out the district’s three exam schools. All three admit students through a competitive entrance process rather than open enrollment. However, families outside that exam-school pipeline still have a strong public option. New Mission High School in Hyde Park is a choice school within Boston Public Schools. It holds the distinction of being the highest-performing BPS high school that is not an exam school, ranking 175th in Massachusetts with a 73% AP participation rate. Consequently, students who apply through the district’s school choice process, rather than an entrance exam, start from a different place than their Latin School peers. Importantly, that starting point has not stopped New Mission graduates from reaching selective engineering programs. This is especially true for students who build a place-rooted strategy around one of the city’s defining features: its increasingly urgent relationship with the harbor at its doorstep.
Meet Desmond
Desmond grew up in East Boston, three blocks from the Border Street waterfront. His family has three generations of Massachusetts fishing-industry roots. He attended New Mission High School, commuting daily from Eastie to Hyde Park. During his sophomore year, Desmond watched king tides push seawater over the seawall near his grandmother’s apartment. That flooding, rather than any single class, set his college trajectory in motion.
Step 1: Choosing a Major
Desmond declared coastal and environmental engineering as his intended major during junior year. He chose the field after researching sea-level rise data for his own city. Boston’s landfill-built neighborhoods, including large sections of East Boston, South Boston, and the Back Bay, face some of the highest coastal flood exposure of any major American city. Instead of pursuing a broader environmental science track, he narrowed toward the structural and infrastructure side of climate adaptation. That decision shaped every subsequent choice in his application.
Step 2: Improving Test Scores
Desmond took the SAT, and his first attempt in the fall produced a 1210. He enrolled in New Mission’s Wentworth Institute of Technology partnership coursework. Additionally, he worked with a peer tutor twice weekly on data analysis and reading comprehension. By his second sitting in the spring, his score had climbed to 1440. The jump came largely from improvement on the math section.
Step 3: Deepening Extracurriculars
Rather than joining several unrelated clubs, Desmond concentrated his time around his major. He co-led New Mission’s environmental club and organized a beach cleanup partnership with Boston Harbor Now. Additionally, he volunteered as a docent at the New England Aquarium’s climate exhibit on weekends. Each activity reinforced the same throughline: coastal systems under pressure, and communities working to adapt them.
Step 4: Adding Research
During the summer before senior year, Desmond joined the Stone Living Lab’s Coastal Surge Investigators program. It is a participatory science initiative run by UMass Boston’s School for the Environment, Boston Harbor Now, and the National Park Service. He collected baseline shoreline and storm-surge data at Fallon Pier. Subsequently, he compared it against the city’s Climate Ready Boston flood-risk projections for East Boston. His findings, presented informally to Stone Living Lab researchers, suggested that projected surge levels near his own neighborhood exceeded the buffer built into several nearby seawalls.
Step 5: Entering Competitions
Desmond competed in the Blue Lobster Bowl, the Massachusetts regional round of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl. He served as a member of New Mission’s four-student team. His team did not advance to nationals. However, the competition’s ocean-science focus qualified him for preferential consideration for MIT Sea Grant’s six-week ocean science internship, which he completed the following summer.
Step 6: Writing a Personal Statement
Desmond’s personal statement opened with a single image: his grandmother sweeping seawater off her kitchen floor after a king tide. From there, the essay moved into his Coastal Surge Investigators data. It closed with his growing conviction that infrastructure, not just awareness, would determine whether neighborhoods like his stayed livable. He avoided generic climate-crisis language throughout. Instead, he grounded every paragraph in Border Street, Fallon Pier, and the specific seawalls he had measured himself.
Step 7: Using EA and ED Strategically
Desmond applied Early Action to Northeastern University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Both schools fit his interest in co-op programs and project-based engineering. Northeastern and WPI accepted him in December. Above all, he wanted a program with deep coastal engineering research ties close enough to Boston Harbor for continued fieldwork. Therefore, he applied Early Decision to Tufts University’s School of Engineering. Tufts admitted him in December, and he withdrew his other applications.

Desmond’s path illustrates something important for Boston-area families. A New Mission education did not close doors to Tufts or Northeastern. Notably, his application worked because it built genuine expertise rather than simply listing credentials. Students attending nearby BPS options can apply the same lesson.
