Texas Football Schedule 2024 & Longhorns History
June 3, 2024
The University of Texas Longhorns are one of the most storied programs in college football, boasting four national championships and 31 conference titles. Despite their historic prestige, they’ve struggled in the past decade to remain relevant on a national stage. Last season, however, the Longhorns made it to their first College Football Playoff. Although Texas lost 31-37 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the Longhorns have a lot to build on for the season ahead. Under the leadership of third-year coach Steve Sarkisian and returning quarterback Quinn Ewers, the Longhorns are aiming for another spot in the newly expanded College Football Playoffs. The 2024 season is pivotal for Texas as they embark on their inaugural SEC campaign. See below for the Texas Longhorns football schedule 2024. Hook ’em Horns!

Texas Longhorns Football – 2024 Game-by-Game Quick Preview
The Longhorns’ schedule this season features plenty of new teams. Matter of fact, eight of the 12 teams on their schedule have played Texas fewer than 5 times!
- Colorado State
- These two teams last played in 1975. The Rams went 5-7 last year and should be a nice warm-up game for the Longhorns.
- Michigan
- A very intriguing Big Ten matchup between two teams who’ve only played each other once (the 2005 Rose Bowl). Michigan is coming off a National Championship and expectations have never been higher in Ann Arbor. This game should be a good indicator of the Longhorns’ readiness for a grueling SEC schedule.
- UTSA
- Texas won the first-ever matchup between these two teams back in 2022. The Roadrunners went 9-4 last season playing out of the American Athletic Conference.
- ULM
- Louisiana-Monroe went 2-10 last year. This should be a final warm-up game before SEC play begins.
- Mississippi State
- Texas last played the Bulldogs in 1999, winning 38-11. Mississippi State is firmly in rebuild mode behind first-year head coach Jeff Lebby.
- Oklahoma
- An iconic rivalry game, the Red River Showdown is always an emotional matchup. Last year, the Sooners beat the 3-ranked Longhorns 34-30. You can bet Texas will be seeking revenge this year in Dallas!

- Georgia
- The Bulldogs are as good as any program in the country, having won back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. Fortunately for Texas, UGA must travel to Austin for this one. Expect this game to be one of the marquee matchups of the college football season.
- Vanderbilt
- Although Vandy owns the all-time series record, the last game played between these two teams was back in 1928 (Vandy won that game 13-12 under Coach McGugin!). This year will be a different story, as Vandy continues to be a perennial SEC punching bag.
- Florida
- It’s hard to believe the last time the Gators played the Longhorns was in 1940! This season, Florida will be fighting for a bowl bid and should be a manageable win for the Longhorns.
- Arkansas
- There’s a long history between these two teams, but mainly from 1928 until 1990. Now that Texas is in the SEC, the rivalry is renewed. Arkansas went 1-7 in the SEC in 2023 and should be hovering around a similar mark this year.
- Kentucky
- The last time these teams played was in 1951, when Texas won 7-6. More recently, Kentucky has yet to break through as a top-tier SEC team although they’ve been solid over the past few seasons.
- Texas A&M
- The Aggies are not short on talent but that wasn’t enough to save Jimbo Fisher’s job last year. Now, under first-year coach Mike Elko, can A&M finally capitalize on the immense talent in the locker room?
Texas Football Coaches
The legacy and strength of the Texas program has been shaped by numerous legendary coaches.
Darrell K Royal (1957-1976, 167–47–5, .774 winning percentage)
Royal is synonymous with Texas football, leading the Longhorns to three national championships and 11 Southwest Conference championships. His innovative wishbone offense changed the game, and the stadium in Austin proudly bears his name.
During his two decades at Texas, the team never had a losing season. He was also the first head coach to hire an academic advisor for student-athletes, a practice that is commonplace today.
Royal was named “Coach of the Decade” of the 1960s, and he was enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983.
Fred Akers (1977-1986, 86-31-2 .732 winning percentage)
Taking over the program after Royal was an intimidating task, but Akers rose to the occasion. During his 10-year tenure, the Longhorns won two Cotton Bowls and three Southwest Conference championships.

Akers coached running back Earl Campbell, who became the first Longhorn to win the Heisman Trophy in 1977. He also coached a 1983 Texas team that saw a staggering 18 players drafted into the NFL.
Akers has the third-most wins in Texas history and was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2016
Mack Brown (1998-2013, 158-48 .767 winning percentage)
Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose! Friday Night Lights said it best, Mack Brown is Texas football.
Under Brown’s 16-year tenure, Texas won the 2005 national championship in a thrilling Rose Bowl victory over top-ranked USC. He also won two Big 12 titles, the 2008 Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year, and the 2009 Big 12 Coach of the Year.
He coached a host of NFL stars, including quarterback Vince Young, quarterback Colt McCoy, running back Cedric Benson, and linebacker Derrick Johnson.

Notable Rivalries
Now that the Longhorns are joining the SEC, they are renewing several of their historic rivalries. First and foremost, however, is a rivalry that is one of the best in all of sports…
Red River Showdown (vs. Oklahoma)
Dating back to 1900, this annual game is one of college football’s most storied rivalries. The game is traditionally held at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas during the Texas State Fair, providing a neutral site equally distant from both campuses.
The Longhorns hold the all-time series lead at 63-51-5 but Oklahoma has won 11 of the past 15 games dating back to 2010.

Lone Star Showdown (vs. Texas A&M)
Resuming in 2024, this rivalry has deep roots. The in-state battle happens each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, although the teams haven’t played since 2011.
Texas leads the all-time series 76-37-5 and there have been a total of 118 games played dating back to 1894. The Longhorns have won 12 of the past 17 matchups dating back to 1995.
Texas- Arkansas
This is another renewed rivalry that dates back to the days when Texas and Arkansas were both in the Southwest Conference (which ended in 1996). Texas leads the all-time series 56-23 in a rivalry that mainly spans from the ‘30s to the ‘80s.
The last time they played was actually in 2021 when the Razorbacks manhandled #15-ranked Texas, 40-21. After the game, Arkansas fans stormed the field and tore down the goalposts. Don’t think the Longhorns forgot about that one!
Heading into the 2024 Season – Texas Longhorn Football Schedule 2024 & Longhorns History
The Longhorns are poised for another big season, and there’s a lot of pressure on returning quarterback Quinn Ewers.
Ewers put together a phenomenal 2023 campaign that ranks 5th best for passing yards in a single season (3,479 yards) and led the Longhorns’ to their first College Football Playoff berth.
Can the Longhorns navigate the challenges of their first SEC campaign and make another push for the CFP? Only time will tell, but The Eyes of Texas are certainly upon them.
