26) One night a woman was sitting inside a house with no light. She did not have a lamp or a candle—nothing at all—yet she was reading. How?
Answer: The woman was reading Braille.
27) A king with no queen or children needed to decide who would inherit his kingdom. In order to select a successor, he gave all the children in the kingdom a single seed and said that whoever grew the largest, most beautiful plant would inherit his throne. A year later, all the children presented the king with their plants, but he named a little girl with an empty pot as his successor. Why?
Answer: He gave all the children fake seeds. The little girl with the empty pot was the only one who didn’t pretend the seed had grown.
28) One snowy night, Detective File was in her house sitting by the fire when a snowball came crashing through the window, breaking it. Detective File ran to the window and saw three neighborhood brothers running away. Their names were John, Mark, and Paul. The next day Detective File received a note that read “? He broke your window.” Which of the three brothers should Detective File ask about the incident?
Answer: Mark. ? = Question Mark, so the note read “Question mark. He broke your window.”
29) Detective Case was enjoying a vacation when there was a knock at his hotel room door. He opened the door to see a man he’d never seen before who said, “I’m sorry. I have made a mistake. I thought this was my room.” He then went down the hall and got on the elevator. Detective Case was suspicious and followed him. Why?
Answer: If it was his room, he would not have knocked.
30) Detective File is quickly coming up on an open field. She has a bag with her. If she doesn’t open the bag before she reaches the field, she’ll be badly injured. What is in the bag?
Answer: Detective File is skydiving and the bag contains the parachute.
31) Detective File shot Detective Case and then held him underwater for 5 minutes. Then they went out to dinner. How was this possible?
Answer: Detective File shot a photograph of Detective Case and then developed the film.
32) Detective Case was only days away from discovering the identity of a mob boss when he went missing. He left behind a single note that read: 5508 51 7718. Currently, there are three suspects: Bill, Landon, and Greg. Can you crack Detective Case’s code?
Answer: When the code is flipped upside down, the numbers resemble letters:

Robbery Detective Riddles
33) A man called up Detective File to report that his grandfather’s watch had been stolen. When Detective File visited his house, she saw broken glass on the lawn. She arrested the man. Why?
Answer: If someone had broken into the house, the broken glass would have been inside the house, not on the lawn. The window was broken from the inside.
34) One day Detective Case went to a lake. There were three other people at the lake—one swimming, one fishing, and one on a boat. When the swimmer returned to shore, she saw that her bracelet had been stolen. But when she looked around there were no footprints in the sand. Even though Detective Case did not see the theft, he immediately identified the culprit. Who stole the bracelet, and how?
Answer: The person with the fishing rod stole the bracelet. Only that individual could steal the bracelet without leaving footprints.
35) The captain of a Japanese ship removed his watch while he went to oil some parts of the ship. When he returned to his cabin, he realized the watch was missing. He suspected three crew members of stealing the watch and asked each of them what they had been doing during the ten minutes he had been gone. The cook said, “I was in the galley kitchen preparing tonight’s dinner.” The engineer said, “I was working in the engine room.”
The seamen said, “I was on the mast adjusting the flag because someone had attached it upside down by mistake.”
The captain immediately identified the culprit. How?
Answer: The seamen was the thief. The Japanese flag is white with a single red dot in the middle and looks the same from all sides.
36) A rich man’s son was kidnapped. The ransom note told him to bring a valuable diamond to a phone booth in the middle of a public park. Plainclothes police officers surrounded the park, intending to follow the kidnapper or his messenger. The rich man arrived at the phone booth and followed the instructions but the police were powerless to prevent the diamond from leaving the park or following the messenger. Why?
Answer: When the rich man reached the phone booth he found a carrier pigeon in a cage, as well as a message instructing the man to put the diamond into a small bag attached to the pigeon’s neck and then to release the bird. When the man did so, the pigeon flew across the city to its owner and the police were powerless to follow it.
37) There are three suspects in a robbery, one of which is the true culprit.
>Suspect A: “I didn’t do it.”
>Suspect B: “C did it.”
>Suspect C: “B is lying.”
You know that two suspects are lying and one is telling the truth. Who is guilty?
Answer: A is guilty. If B was telling the truth that C did it, then A must be lying, which would mean that A did it. This is a contradiction, so B must be lying. If B is lying, then C’s statement is true. Therefore C is telling the truth and the other two are lying, which means A is guilty.
38) A woman watched a guy being robbed. She cried out but did nothing to prevent the robbery. Why?
Answer: She was watching a TV show.
39) Which three letters can frighten a thief away?
Answer: I-C-U (“I See You”)
40) Every day, a woman was seen crossing the border carrying bags of sand on a motorbike. After some time, the border police became suspicious and stopped her, but found she only had sand on her, so they let her go. What was the woman smuggling across the border?

Poison Riddles
41) Cal and Hal met at a diner. They each ordered iced teas. Hal was very thirsty and drank five glasses in the time it took Cal to finish one. The drinks were poisoned, but only Cal got sick. Why?
Answer: The poison was in the ice. Hal drank his drinks too quickly for the ice to melt.
42) Five people were kidnapped. The kidnapper gave each of them two pills and a glass of water. He told each of them to take one pill but warned them that one was poisonous and the other harmless. Somehow, every victim chose the poisonous pill and became ill. How were they so unlucky?
Answer: The pills were both harmless. The poison was in the water.
43) “Who poisoned her?” cried a man as he rushed into the hospital where his wife was kept. The man was stopped by Detective File who asked him where he had been all evening. He answered that he had been at a friend’s place but when he called to check on his wife, the housekeeper answered the call and told him his wife had just been taken to the hospital after collapsing. As soon as he heard this he ran to the hospital. Detective File arrested him. Why?
Answer: As soon as he entered the hospital, he cried “Who poisoned her?” but no one had told him she was poisoned—only that she collapsed.
44) There were five people in a room. I came in and offered all of them poisoned drinks. 4 people accepted. How many people in the room were not poisoned?
Answer: 2 people were not poisoned: the individual who did not accept the drink and the poisoner.
45) A man is discovered dead sitting at his desk alone in a locked office. There were no weapons in the room. The only clue is a sealed envelope on the desk in front of him. How did he die?
Answer: The envelope glue was poisoned, so the man died when he licked the envelope to seal it.
Murder Mystery Detective Riddles
46) A famous chemist was found dead in his lab. The only evidence was a piece of paper near the body where the chemist had written the names of five elements: Nickel, Carbon, Oxygen, Lanthanum, and Sulfur. The security guard said only three people had visited the chemist that day: His brother John, his colleague Nicolas, and his friend Simon. Who murdered the chemist?
Answer: Nicolas, as revealed by the list of elements. The abbreviations spell out the murderer’s name: Ni-C-O-La-S.
47) On the first day of school, someone murdered the history teacher. Detective Case identified four possible suspects, who provided the following alibis:
The principal said she was in her office.
The math teacher said he was giving a midterm exam.
The soccer coach said she was running drills with her players.
The custodian said she was taking out the garbage.
After hearing their alibis, Detective Case arrested the murderer. Who killed the history teacher and how did Detective Case know?
Answer: The math teacher killed the history teacher. He claimed he was giving a midterm exam, but it was the first day of school.
48) A couple went to Hawaii for their honeymoon. Unfortunately, the husband returned home alone after his new wife died in a horrible scuba diving accident. Detective Case contacted the travel agent and then arrested the husband for murdering his wife. How did Detective Case know?
Answer: The travel agent revealed that the husband had only booked one return ticket.
49) At the bottom of a ten-story building, a body was found. The building owner called Detective File to determine whether it was a murder or a suicide. The detective went to the top floor, opened the window, and tossed a coin. Then she went to the next floor, opened the window, and tossed a coin. She did that on each floor. At the bottom, she announced it was a murder. How did she know?
Answer: Detective File had to open every window, meaning that someone must have pushed the victim out and then closed the window. If it was a suicide, the detective would have found an open window.
50) A wealthy woman lived in a circular home. One morning, she was found dead in the front yard. Detective File arrived and asked the staff about what they had been doing before discovering the body.
The driver said he had been washing the car.
The housekeeper said she had been dusting the corners of the house.
The cook said she had been preparing lunch.
Who is lying?
Answer: The housekeeper. A circular house wouldn’t have any corners.
